5 Women In Tech Scholarships You Should Know
Want to attend a bootcamp but it’s on a tight budget?
A number of bootcamps offer partial scholarships, or sometimes even a full round, to women in tech. What is really important is how to successfully apply for a scholarship.
After all, bootcamps can boost your tech career for a fraction of the cost of a four-year degree. And it turns out that 33% of business leaders believe bootcamps offer an amount of training comparable to that of an undergraduate degree, according to BestColleges’ Bootcamp 2021 Trends Report. The survey also found that 48% of business leaders expect bootcamps to play a key role in shaping their workforce in the future.
What is a Bootcamp?
Technology bootcamps offer a short and intensive training session in software engineering, web development, cybersecurity or other technological fields. This training typically requires less time and expense than attending a two- or four-year college, while preparing the bootcamp participant with the skills needed to enter the tech workforce.
Bootcamps are booming. In 2013, there were 30 bootcamps listed in Course Report, a coding bootcamp directory, and there are now more than 500 around the world, according to the publication. Coding Bootcamps in 2021 report. The average bootcamp costs $ 14,000 and typically lasts 6 to 28 weeks, with the average starting salary for graduates hovering around $ 69,000.
A growing trend among bootcamps is the ability for participants to defer payment until they have a job, reducing the need to pay a large chunk of change or secure a large loan. But even a deferred payment means you ultimately have to pay for the program. So here are a handful of scholarships to help you get that free money – and what you need to know about each.
Codeworks + GirlCode Scholarship
100 percent of tuition fees covered
Get ready for the next round of Codeworks + GirlCode scholarships, which usually starts every spring.
The scholarships cover 100% of Codeworks’ 12-week immersive software engineering bootcamp, which will set you back $ 8,900, or its 8-week immersive web development course, which costs $ 6,500. The courses are remote, with the exception of Europe which allows on-site courses and, therefore, entails a higher price to attend without a scholarship.
You must first register as a GirlCode member to apply for the Codeworks + GirlCode scholarships. The scholarships are awarded to 50 women around the world each year.
The application process is always competitive, even though a significant portion of these women in tech scholarships are offered, Jon Norris, marketing manager at Codeworks, told Built In.
The judges assess the entries based on three criteria. One is your personal situation and the impact the stock market would have on your life. The second is your attitude and your personality. Finally, your technical aptitude.
Your personal situation is most important in evaluating applications, as Codeworks and GirlCode want to ensure that scholarships go to people who need them most and where they will have the most impact, Norris said.
However, passing the second criterion is your ticket.
“Just show us your personality. We’re a small school and we have a very selective admissions process, so a lot of our job is to make sure each cohort is full of great, motivated, and smart people, ”Norris said. “If we love someone right away, we’ll do everything we can to make sure that person gets the help they need.”
More than half of Codeworks graduates get jobs within the first month of completing the program and 100 percent are hired within the first six months, Norris said. He noted that Codeworks graduates typically receive a salary that is 14% higher than the average software engineer salary for their geographic location. In the United States, the average salary for a software engineer is $ 102,000, he added.

Coding is a skill-based industry, so focus on showing us past projects you’ve worked on.
DevPoint typically receives five to 10 scholarship applicants per session who have gone through the entire application process. Two Women in Tech scholarships are awarded in each session – one for her full-time web development bootcamp and the other for her part-time web development course. This was the case for Danielle Dona, recipient of the Women in Tech Fellowship from DevPoint Labs. After earning a computer science degree from a college in Texas, she discovered that there were many career paths to follow with a computer science degree.
“I found out that I liked web development and started watching tutorials online and decided to look for a bootcamp to learn more about it,” said Dona, who worked at the time in sales at Best Buy after graduating from college.
She completed DevPoint’s web development bootcamp in January and started working as a web development teaching assistant in March at DevPoint.
If you miss the October 2, 2021 deadline for the next Winter Cohort scholarship, the deadline for the Fall Cohort scholarship is July 10, 2022.
